US says trusts Pakistan government on terror war

WASHINGTON: US has said combating war on terrorism is in interest of both Pakistan and United States and it has full trust on Pakistani government and will continue extending support to Pakistan in this connection, Geo news reported Monday.

Briefing media here, the spokesman to US state department Ian Kelley said he was unaware of an agreement to keep some militant factions out of the fight for now, but other U.S. officials said the strategy is not surprising or necessarily worrisome.

Because the faction loyal to Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud poses the most direct threat to the Pakistani government and army, it is the logical first target, U.S. officials briefed on the offensive said.

He said conducting operation in tribal mountainous areas is an uneasy job but Pakistan army successfully carried out military offensive against Taliban in Swat and now is engaged in South Waziristan Agency (SWA), which reflects its determination to toot out terrorism.

The United States, while criticizing the suicide bombing on Iran, mentioned that it is not involved in the attack.

Spokesman Kelly said, “We condemn this act of terrorism and mourn the loss of innocent lives”. "Reports of alleged US involvement are completely false," he added.

Pakistan cuts deal with anti-US militants

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Pakistan's army, in the midst of a major new offensive against Taliban militants, has struck deals to keep two powerful, anti-U.S. tribal chiefs from joining the battle against the government, officials said Monday.

The deals increase the chances of an army victory against Pakistan's enemy No. 1, but indicate that the 3-day-old assault into the Taliban's strongholds in South Waziristan may have less effect than the U.S. wants on a spreading insurgency across the border in Afghanistan.

Under the terms agreed to about three weeks ago, Taliban renegades Maulvi Nazir and Hafiz Gul Bahadur will stay out of the current fight in parts of South Waziristan controlled by the Pakistani Taliban. They will also allow the army to move through their own lands unimpeded, giving the military additional fronts from which to attack the Taliban.

In exchange, the army will ease patrols and bombings in the lands controlled by Nazir and Bahadur, two Pakistani intelligence officials based in the region told media on condition of anonymity because revealing their identities would compromise their work.

An army spokesman described the deal as an "understanding" with the men that they would stay neutral. The agreements underscore Pakistan's past practice of targeting only militant groups that attack the government or its forces inside Pakistan.

Western officials say South Waziristan is also a major sanctuary and training ground for al-Qaida operatives. The mountain-studded region has been under near-total militant control for years and is considered a likely hiding place for Osama bin Laden.

The United States has responded cautiously to the initial Pakistani strategy, publicly welcoming the offensive but saying little about the specific choice of targets.

"We have a shared goal here, and the shared goal is fighting violent extremism," State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said Monday.

Kelly said he was unaware of an agreement to keep some militant factions out of the fight for now, but other U.S. officials said the strategy is not surprising or necessarily worrisome.

Because the faction loyal to Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud poses the most direct threat to the Pakistani government and army, it is the logical first target, U.S. officials briefed on the offensive said.

SWA operation to target terrorists, says COAS letter to Mehsud tribes
RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Chief Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani Monday clarified that the objective of the operation in South Waziristan is not to target peace and country loving people of Mehsud tribes, instead the aim is to eliminate Uzbek, local and foreign terrorists.

In a message addressed to Mehsud tribes, the COAS said he admits that the tribes in question including the Mehsud tribes are loyal to Pakistan. “The tribes have always served as Pakistani troops without remuneration,” he added.

He said the objective of the military operation in South Waziristan is to pull the Mehsud tribes form the clutches of terrorists elements and provide an opportunity to the Mehsud tribes to live in their area in peace.

12 die in SWA bombing

WANA: Twelve people, including six militants and a minor, were killed and 18 others seriously injured when fighter planes pounded targets in various areas of South Waziristan Agency (SWA) on Friday.

Sources said fighter planes pounded Makeen, Ladha, Saam, Salay Rogha, Spina Teega, Badar, Bospa, Nano and Barwand areas in the morning, killing 12 people, including six suspected militants.

The six others, including a child, killed in the bombing were believed to be tribesmen. Two women were also among the injured. The wounded were rushed to a private clinic, where eight of them were stated to be in critical condition.

Reports from the area said six hideouts of the militants were destroyed in the air strikes while some houses belonging to civilians were also damaged. Political administration confirmed the bombing but officials did not speak about the number of casualties in the attack.

A large number of people had started shifting from the area after the bombardment. However, without any proper destination and due to closed roads, some of the displaced families headed for villages on the Pak-Afghan border while others tried to enter the settled areas adjoining South Waziristan on foot.

Eyewitnesses said the fighter planes had been targeting parts of South Waziristan for the last three days. However, the militants had moved to mountainous hideouts, leaving the populated areas. It was learnt that the militants were aware of the aerial strikes and were busy in digging caves in the mountains and jungles in South Waziristan for the past few months.

Tribal elders, including Malik Saeed Anwar Mahsud, demanded of the government to open the roads for the displaced families so that they could reach the settled areas of Tank and Bannu. They deplored that the displaced people were stranded at a checkpoint near Tank. They asked the authorities to allow them to enter the settled areas.

They said at least 200,000 tribesmen had been displaced from South Waziristan so far and reached Tank and Dera Ismail Khan. They feared that 300,000 more people were expected to shift to safer areas.

The elders lamented that no relief activities or any camp had been established by the government for the displaced people of South Waziristan prior to the military operation. The tribal elders demanded the establishment of relief camps on an emergency basis to accommodate and provide basic amenities to the displaced tribesmen.

AFP adds: Meanwhile, suspected Taliban launched a rocket attack, killing three soldiers and wounding four at a military camp in South Waziristan Agency, official said. The militants targeted the Landi Noor Army camp in the Shakai area of South Waziristan.

The rocket strike left three soldiers dead and four wounded, a security official said, requesting anonymity. Before dawn, a Pakistani drone crashed near Jandola town in South Waziristan. “The crash was caused by a technical fault and no hostile fire was involved,” a senior official said.

Curfew imposed in SWA ahead of operation

PESHAWAR: The political administration in South Waziristan has announced the enforcement of an indefinite curfew in different parts of the tribal agency amid speculations that a military operation against the militants linked to the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) could be launched very soon.

The curfew would be enforced today (Saturday) at 7:00 am in different areas, including Wana, Shakai, etc, where the Ahmadzai Wazir tribe lives. One apparent reason for imposing the curfew is to facilitate the movement of troops and military convoys from Wana and other areas to places populated by the Mehsud tribe, including Makeen, Ladha and Srarogha.

There are also reports that the government was planning to expedite the shifting of the civilian population from the Mehsud area in South Waziristan to places like Tank and Dera Ismail Khan, so that security forces could freely tackle the militants without bothering about the civilian casualties. Bombing is already being carried out by fighter planes and gunship helicopters in the area, which the military said was aimed at softening the militants’ positions, before deploying troops for a massive ground offensive in the tough and mountainous terrain.

Will Punjab CM make way for a free and impartial enquiry into the Lahore terror incidents?

The provincial capital came under attack on Thursday as terrorists unleashed coordinated raids on three law-enforcement facilities, killing at least 19 people, including 14 security officials and 41 others sustained injuries, in fierce fighting, before security forces brought the situation under control. All nine attackers were also shot dead by security personnel, officials said.

The three attacks were launched within an hour of each other – starting 9.30am with a raid on the building that houses FIA offices and followed by assaults on the Manawan Police Academy and the Elite Force Training Centre at Bedian Road. The brazen attacks on tightly guarded security sites came just six days after a highly organized attack on the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. A TTP faction – the Amjad Farooqi group – has claimed responsibility for the attacks, reported a private TV channel.

Thursday’s attack on three different sites was the fifth major terror incident in the city during the current year. At least 50 people were killed in the previous four attacks. On June 12-- Sarfraz Ahmed Naeemi, a leading anti-Taliban cleric, was assassinated, with six other people killed and five injured, when a suicide bomber detonated himself at the Jamia Naeemia madrassa in Garhi Shahu. On May 27--suicide bombers detonated a vehicle loaded with 100kg explosives near the offices of the capital city police officer (CCPO) and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Around 27 people were killed and 326 injured. On March 30--around 10 terrorists entered the Police Training School Manawan. Eight cadets and one civilian were killed while 93 cadets and civilians were injured. On March 3--twelve terrorists armed with hand grenades and sophisticated weapons attacked the visiting Sri Lankan cricket team near the Liberty Roundabout. Six cricketers were injured, while six policemen and two civilians were killed.

The attacks in Lahore took place despite warnings from intelligence agencies that this would happen. Some of these warnings had appeared in the media. In spite of that the Punjab government, it seems, didn’t take it seriously, yet it found an opportunity making use of it for their political purposes and forced postponement of the by-elections already scheduled by Election Commission. If we are unable to stop the militants despite such precise intelligence, there is quite obviously something that is very wrong. We need to find out where these oversights or lapses or negligence are occurring and why. In times of war there can be no room for mistakes, especially ones that lead to death and destruction on this scale.

Will the Punjab chief minister being the chief executive of the province own this responsibility and make way for a free and fair enquiry into the matter, as the general public including the aggrieved people would like some heads must roll for the criminal lax and laxity on the part of the authority. We must find out why it has occurred and come up with ways to stop the other bombers, who even now may be chalking up their plans and detecting security weaknesses they can exploit.

Obama 'concerned' over Pakistan attacks: WH

NEW ORLEANS: US President Barack Obama is concerned over the loss of life in new militant attacks in Pakistan, the White House said Thursday, adding the strikes underscored the threat from extremists.

"Britain stands shoulder to shoulder with Pakistan in the fight against terrorism and extremism," said Brown's spokesman.

The simultaneous assaults underscored the power of armed radicals to strike in the heart of Pakistan and the weakness of poorly-equipped security forces, despite promises of a new offensive against the Taliban near the Afghan border.
